OUR ENVIRONMENT
Conservation is an integral part of the day-to-day conduct for all of our associates. We call this program the Campus Green initiative.
J&J Industries Corporate Vision and Environmental PolicyOur priority of conservation first began by identifying waste streams throughout our facility and throughout each step of manufacturing. As the process of waste reduction began, it was easy to identify the many areas in which J&J minimizes waste to landfill, wastewater, and thermal and electrical energy. Throughout our facilities, items such as paper, cardboard, strapping, roll wrap, plastic bottles, aluminum cans and other metals are collected daily for recycling. In addition to collection of recyclable materials, all individual waste cans were removed from offices and workstations in July 2008. Each department in the corporate office has only one garbage container, and throughout the manufacturing areas, we share only two to three trash containers. This practice was put in place to limit the amount of waste by restricting easy access to waste disposal. Recycling bins, however, are kept at each individual desk, and our associates consider the recyclability of all items before they are disposed. In 2009 alone, we recycled 23 times more material than was landfilled. In other words, for every pound we discarded, we recycled 23. Our greenhouse gas mitigation program is another important aspect in our pursuit of sustainability. In 2006, J&J Industries began tracking our greenhouse gas emissions on a monthly basis. We have the ability to evaluate process specific (i.e. extrusion, dyeing, etc.) contributions to our environmental footprint. This enables J&J to identify opportunities for improvement and foster ongoing innovation. Since 2008, J&J Industries' greenhouse gas inventory has been third-party certified to the CarbonNeutral Company Protocol. Compared to many other accounting methodologies, this is quite rigorous. We can confidently meet or exceed any voluntary or regulatory standards with regards to greenhouse gas management. A recent addition to our Campus Green initiative came in 2008, when J&J Industries became ISO 14001:2004 certified. The certification by the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) came as a result of an established organization-wide Environmental Management System (EMS). This process requires third-party validation annually to evaluate the effectiveness of the EMS. ISO 14001 exists to help organizations minimize how their operations negatively impact the environment, comply with applicable laws, regulations, other environmentally oriented requirements, and continually improve in each of these. The ISO 14001 environmental standard was launched in 1996 and is currently used in 138 countries. J&J Industries' modular carpet facility in Calhoun, GA is also ISO 14001:2004 certified. All J+J/Invision products are manufactured in facilities with this certification. J+J/Templeton will begin preparation and planning for certification in the near future. Community Environmental LeadershipEnvironmental conservation is a leading initiative of J&J Industries. Our campus-wide effort, among all associates, encourages and supports working and thinking with social responsibility in mind. This focus brings all employees together to make our workplace and community a better place to live and work. It places responsibility on each employee, from the mill to the corporate offices to do his/her part in environmental and social stewardship. As a member of Adopt-A-Mile for over 15 years, J&J Industries employees divide into teams to pick-up trash around the J&J Industries campus and along the surrounding public roads. In 2003, J&J Industries developed a 20-acre section of the campus as a U.S. Nature Wetland Conservancy to filter and purify storm water run-off. Once completed, the wetland area was donated to the City of Dalton for the community to enjoy. In 2007, J&J Industries partnered with the Boy Scouts of America to build steps leading down to the wetlands. The stairs allow employees and people in the community to access the wetlands and enjoy nature, while offering the Scout Troop an opportunity to complete a project as a group. In 2008, we once again partnered with the Boy Scouts of America to build a small dock on one side of the wetlands to allow better viewing of the wildlife living there. The wetland provides vital protection to our waterways as well as a sanctuary to a wide variety of wildlife and a place for community. While the wetlands provided a nice area for J&J Industries' employees to escape, there was not an easily accessible path to get to the area. In fall 2008, a sidewalk was installed beginning at the J&J corporate office building and extending to the wetlands. In keeping with the EnAct® program, the J&J Industries Facilities Team chose to create the new sidewalk from pervious concrete. This type of concrete is a mix of coarse aggregate, cement, water and little to no sand. This mixture creates an open-cell structure, allowing rainwater to filter through to underlying soil. Pervious concrete reduces storm water runoff that can cause increased pollution in rivers and streams, flash floods and loss of rainwater that could otherwise replenish water tables and aquifers. This technology channels rainwater back into the ground rather than into sewer systems as runoff. The new sidewalk provides over a mile loop accessible walking path with future plans to connect to other buildings throughout the campus. |
